The motivation for starting this blog comes from my own experience around worlking in a traditional 9 to 5 work pattern, and the frustrations and pitfalls that can comes with that. Anyone working in a traditional working environment will know what I’m talking about. Let’s have a look at what I’m talking about in more detail.

Working 9 to 5 means stability. It means a solid, focussed, groundhog day routine where your alarm goes off at 7:30 in the morning and you’re in the office for 9, ready to go through the same monotonous tasks as you did the previous day.

It’s easy to see why people get into a rut and daydream about new potentials and exciting new horizons. Worse still, it’s easy to see why people start to eat poorly, forget to exercise or even medicate themselves with substances to help push stress to the back of their mind.

That’s not to say working 9 to 5 doesn’t have it’s benefits. Psychologists will tell you a fixed routine, and having people who rely on you to get a task done is essential to our life and to a feeling of wellbeing. However, it’s when the nature of your work and your routine becomes monotonous and unproductive that it’s time to look for a change.

Alternatives to Working 9 to 5

The volume of the information online these days is so vast that it can be difficult to wade through it all and get to the killer piece of information that you’re looking for. For example, if you’re trawling round the internet looking for that dream job – good luck to you. I hope you find what you’re looking for.

However, that’s not my aim in this blog. There are far, far too many blogs and resources out there promising the earth and delivering very little.

If, for example, you’re in a solid, steady job with a decent income that happens to be following a 9 to 5 working pattern, then this may well be the best option for you. Not everybody needs to give up working immediately and join the rush to live a dream, remote lifestyle that lets you blog from far flung corners of the earth.

To be honest, when I read these resources I hardly ever see anyone making this point. A good half of the bloggers and freelance workers out there seem to be selling an idyllic, Instagrammable lifestyle that is A) unobtainable and B) not suitable for everyone.

Whilst it’s certainly a dream of mine to be able to sit on a beach in Thailand, sipping from a coconut and churning out blog articles, I’m far more interested in real, tangible working opportunities that anyone can turn their hand to.

Whether that’s people with limited online abilities, family commitments or manual skills. Whether that’s people who’ve always been self employed or never. Or whether that’s people who haven’t the foggiest idea where to start having worked 9 to 5 their entire adult life, but have unfortunately found themselves made redundant at the age of 60. These are the people I’m most interested in.

The people with flashy Instagram accounts seem to be able to look after themselves, don’t you think?

So that’s it. That’s what I intend to do on this blog.

I’ll be following all the latest trends in gig based and flexible working opportunities and discussing them on here. Some of them will be brilliant new opportunities for people to make a serious living. Some of them will very possibly be nonsense, and I’ll happily share that with you.

What’s for sure though, is the necessity to adapt. Opportunities for solid, well paid 9 to 5 work are far more infrequent than they were 10 or 20 years ago. And what work is available increasingly comes without the final salary pension and without the job security that it once did.

So this may well be it. The time to make that change, and take the plunge into a brave new world of working. It might just be the best thing you ever did.
